I meet a lot of people and every so often I am uplifted by the kind of qualities that are obvious in some.
None more so this Year than Ann Pinn.

Ann leads from the front and has never lost Her sincere Interest in people.
I know She is patient and long suffering...because She supports Brighton and Hove Albion FC!

Employment History

2008 -                                              Derek Carpenter Marketing
        Specialist Sales And Marketing Support

Using my skills developed over the years, I began freelance Sales and Marketing support to Companies. My intention was always to return to Industry and four years went quickly as I supported many Companies set and achieve strategies. 2013 now sees me looking for a permanent new challenge set over the next three to five years.

Duties:
Sales and Marketing support to Companies in Yorkshire and beyond to enable revenue growth, staff development, effective communication, proposal writing and sales and marketing strategies.
Assisted in setting business strategy, provide sales and report training and guide a Company to successful goal achievement.
Completed contract work in support of Chemical and process supply Companies e.g. Fraser Cleaning Technologies (Edinburgh) Core - Chem Limited (Berkshire) Enviro Tech Europe Limited (London) 3M (Reading) CC Hydrosonics Limited (Harlow)

2005 - 2008                                    Baron Blakeslee-Europe Limited (An addition to Enviro-Tech Europe Limited)
                                                         Managing Director

This was a highly valued brand that enabled us to provide chemistry and manufacture equipment as a “total” process solution to our customers.
It increased our control and margins and resulted in further success which strengthened customer relationships.

2002 - 2008                                    Enviro - Tech (Europe) Limited - London
                                                         Sales And Marketing Director

Following the levels of success at Stowlin Croftshaw with the EnSolv brand I was invited to join the manufacturer Enviro Tech Europe Limited with sole responsibility for the EnSolv brand within the UK and Europe. The product removed oils, lubricants, resins, adhesive, Flux and water from metals, plastics and electronics to high specification with performance and environmental benefits. In the Initial stages Stowlin Croftshaw maintained their role until I reorganised the UK into 3 separate areas to provide local area support. This removed their Master Distributor status.

Achievements:

I developed specialist Partners in Europe and fully trained their Sales teams to develop Sales. This type of training was provided to Univar PLC sales staff in multiple Countries.
We covered all key European Countries e.g. France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany Benelux, Scandinavia, Ireland and also took in the Turkish Air Force.
Our product was traditionally 7 times the standard cost of an alternative and demanded specialist skill to prove that Investment versus Benefits was proven to be positive.
All Sales and Marketing fell to me and a high profile established huge success.
We achieved preferred supplier status with Companies like Boeing, Airbus, BAE and many others to produce the most successful product in its field.
I gained accredited Responsible Care status.
Initially we relied on equipment manufacturers to support our activity but this diluted our control and margins. In response to this we completed an acquisition (See above - Baron Blakeslee-Europe Limited)

2000 - 2002                                    Stowlin Croftshaw
                                                         European Business Manager
Chemical Sales, Distribution, Storage and Manufacture – based in Leicester.
My Company Sales force was four and beyond this I was the Sales trainer for Partner Companies throughout Europe.
A wide portfolio range covered, in part, products for all aspects of metal pre treatment.
I had full responsibility to sell and market a Brand called EnSolv with Stowlin Croftshaw being appointed the “Master Distributor” on behalf of Enviro Tech Europe Limited.
EnSolv was to prove highly profitable. I was responsible for phosphate equipment sales under the Cool Phos Brand and Henkel products.
My personal sales contribution over 2 years was £1.5m.
Stowlin operated a waste transfer site under Licence.
To produce increased profits Stowlin provided own label formulations to Companies.

1996 - 2000                                    Amity UK Limited
                                                         Product Manager

This was a newly formed Company based in Barnsley, with an idea to provide an alternative cleaning Solvent to replace products that would become affected by regulation.
As this was a start up business there was no product and no literature
Within 18 months the Company was cash rich as a result of my strategy..
I sold the Borothene brand which was later superseded by the Leksol brand.
I established specialist distribution Partners in the UK and Europe.
An example was Ellis and Everard UK Limited. I worked with their national sales force to produce £500k p.a. sales for Amity with a margin return of 72%. Payment terms were 10 days following delivery.  (Credit terms that were unheard of in this Industry)
I began to create strong links with Aerospace e.g. BAE and Airbus to gain product supplier status.
I established Responsible Care status via the Chemical Business Association (formerly BCDTA).

1981 - 1996                                    Nickerson Chemicals Limited/Nickerson Metolux Limited
                                                         General Sales Manager

Nickerson Chemicals Limited was a long established Chemical Distributor in Yorkshire but largely unknown beyond Yorkshire.
I joined them in 1981 as a Sales Representative to create new business west of the Pennines in areas like Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire and Wales. (I lived in Bolton at the time. My wife’s home town)
During the 1980s an 1990s I established Nickerson Chemicals Limited as the most successful UK supplier of Henkel products.
Within 18 months I had produced over £1m sales.

1985 – I was appointed Sales Manager for Chemical Sales, having responsibility for a team of 4 salespeople and overall responsibility for Staff at the Dewsbury site. I undertook product purchasing responsibilities and developed a lucrative deal with Lubrizol (Bromborough) to acquire bi-product Hydrochloric acid for resale to “picklers” at high margins. This led to a large supply route to the Pillar Wedge Group.
Our trading was £4m.
I was responsible for storage inspection on customer sites prior to deliveries.
The Nickerson Investment Group, based in Manchester, owned the Chemicals business, Nickerson Metolux Limited who manufactured Polymer products for Companies like Ronseal and Cuprinol and Nickerson Fuel and Oils in Halifax. Group turnover was around £35m.
The Chemicals business was the most profitable.
I established new initiatives related to metal treatment and cleaning which others later followed, creating a divisional strategy.
In 1990 a Board decision was taken to produce a strong management team to combine both the Chemicals and Metolux businesses which existed on the same site. I was appointed General Sales Manager with responsibility for each business unit, increasing my Sales team to 10 nationally.
I was responsible for Staff training and development with responsibility for ensuring BS 5750 certification. (Now ISO 9000) I relocated my family to Yorkshire at this point.
Our Chemical portfolio was broad. We used own transport and storage for products like Hydrochloric. Sulphuric and nitric acids and a full range of Chlorinated Solvents delivered via our own multi pot 9 tonnes tanker, which was unique at the time.
The business succeeded year on year despite periods of downturn in the economy.
Some years following my departure the Group encountered trading difficulties and the business was sold to Omnichem Limited of Leicester. (Caldic now own Omnichem)

Associations:

Former Governor of Barnsley College
Former Governor of Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Former SME Ambassador – Yorkshire and North East on behalf of Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Former Secretary - South Yorkshire on behalf of the Institute of Directors
Former Committee Member of the Chemical Business Association. (UK trade membership body)
Former Vice President – Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.
Former Director - Barnsley Development Agency Limited.

Additional Insight:

I have a wide experience of Engineering and Manufacturing environments and successful business development from an “Idea”.
My specialist role in process applications adds the understanding of Oils, Lubricants, Adhesives, Resins, Flux, Polymers and Waxes.
Based in South Yorkshire I am at the centre of the UK with easy links via motorways, airports and rail for travel.
I hold a reputation for “problem solving”, having the outlook that most things can be improved.

Top Town...Top Privilege

Its no secret to anyone that I think Barnsley Folk are special.
People amuse themselves by suggesting its that place between Sheffield and Leeds.
On one level its funny but on another it betrays Ignorance.
Townfolk are good humoured and committed to their Community.
Whatever the National or Global Issues outside Barnsley, this former Mining Community know how to care.
We have the best College in the UK.
We have the best Hospital Staff.
I saw a Nurse recently put Her arm around a Patient and apologise for struggling to pronounce their surname.
We are not grand....but really grounded and sensitive to people we look after.
Today I learned of my Election as a Governor of Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Run by the Community for the Community, Staff try to take the anxiety away from Patients with genuine care and reassurance.
We do not hear enough of the uplifting stories of a Hospital and I will encourage people to celebrate their success with others.
Top College, Top Hospital, Top People...and I get to work with them for the benefit of everyone.
I call that a Top Privilege.

Social Networking - Power of good and bad

There is no doubting we live in the age of Social Networking.
The two prominent ones are Facebook and Twitter.
It keeps us in touch, almost substituting for a phone call or an email.
A way of understanding the power is to compare users with the population of the U.S.A. which is currently near 313 million.
Facebook users number over 800 million!
13.5 million are under 13 years of age.
Twitter by comparison has 300 million users.
The problem is they make you highly visible and its best never to forget that this increases the possibility of identity fraud or misuse.
Try to keep in mind these factors as a user to ensure you are alert.
The effect on your privacy.
The time you spend on Social Networks.
The quality of association you create. Deal with who you know and trust.
Consider your reputation. Be careful to behave in a way which brings credit to you. Your language, opinions and reactions form an impression to others.
Whilst Social Networking can be useful it has its inherent dangers so never let your guard down.

Ian Thomson...never had a P

The best Managing Director i ever worked for was Ian Thomson, never forgetting that there was no P in His surname. It irritated Him no end to the point that a proposal in the post with a P might be destined for the bin!
"Detail is important He would say. If you expect to get Business do your homework"
He was a realist, always telling Managers not to dress things up when a problem arose.
"Give it me warts and all and then we can deal with it properly",He would say.
"Half truths are of no value. You can throw half a brick further and it increases the chance of damage".
His death following early retirement caused by ill health was a blow for the Chemical Industry but the void has never been filled.
When i took Him the problem i always went with a solution.
I recall as i would leave His Office His words would leave me smiling.
"I like it that you are a problem solver - Ive got enough problem makers".
He was an exceptional human being, professional, decent and the kind of role model we are short of these days.

Eric The Great...A Man with vision

Its funny how with time you realise the value of "Hindsight".
Someone once said that life has a habit of asking you take the exam before teaching you the subject!
As a young Man i worked for the Burton Group.
My Manager was a Bowler Hatted Man called Eric Earlston.
To say he seemed impossible to please is an understatement.
Retirement was not far away and i clung to the thought to give me endurance.
I loved my job but intensely disliked His harsh methods, particularly since i got more than my fair share.
The day finally came and i was taken by surprise when He invited me to join others at His home to mark the occasion.
Well, it was a celebration finally for me so one final act of respect could do no harm could it?
To say i was out of place with these oldies was clear to me.
Suddenly He invited me to join Him in His front lounge and asked me to sit down.
All these years on its vivid in my mind.
He asked if He had left me feeling hard done by?
When i said yes His reply left me both 12 feet tall and one inch small at the same time.
"I did it to help you" He said. "I see something in you that even you dont yet. I needed to push you and i know it was hard but with the time i had,i needed to make you ready for a promising career. One day you will see it".
I went on to become the youngest Branch Manager in Manchester area, breaking untold trading records.
I never forgot the importance of investing in others to achieve.
My way was never so harsh but i did get to see the good outcomes.
I remember Him often.

Monkey Business in a Childs Eye

Mother talking to Her Daughter.
They are visiting the Zoo, a World of huge experience for a young one.
"Mummy", the child began.
"Yes sweetheart?" replied Mum.
"Is it really true what they say, that we all came from Monkeys?"
With no hesitation Mum confirmed it as true only to notice a puzzled look form on the childs face.
"Whats the matter?" Mum asked.
"I just think its sad. You are always telling me I should Love and respect Grandma and Grandad so its cruel to put our relatives in cages!".
Ouch.Dont you just love simplicity!

Remarkable things we never think about.....

The Amazing Red Blood Cell
Actual Cell size is eight thousandth of 1 mm Diameter and two thousandths of 1 mm thick.
The Human body produces 2 Million Red Cells every second.
Each Red Cell completes a journey around the body every Minute.
Each Red Cell has a lifespan of around 120 days (4Months)
Each Red Cell is filtered out of the body through the Spleen and Body Tissue.

Haemoglobin
Haemoglobin is a pigment in the Red Cell for transporting Oxygen.
Each Red Cell has 640 Million Haemoglobin Molecules.
Each Haemoglobin Molecule has Four Oxygen Molecules.
This means that 2560 Million Oxygen Molecules journey around the body in a minute cycle in each single Red Cell. Two Million Red Cells are produced every second.

Successful co-operation relies on agreeing the task first!

A Man out walking observed the struggle of another Man at His Home.
The struggle was that one Man alone was failing to move a Washing Machine from His doorway.
Asked if He needed help the householder said "I have been trying for fifteen minutes to get it through the doorway without success"
The walker said "two of us will move it better" and took one side of the washing machine to help.
Fifteen more minutes past with not an inch of movement!
The walker said "I never thought it would be so hard to get a Washer into a House".
With a surprised look the Householder replied " Who said I was trying to get it in. I am trying to get it out!"

Well Done Barnsley Hospital

When you think of the budget needed to run a local Hospital the numbers are hard to Imagine.
Even harder for us to Imagine are the pressures and strains on Staff to care for local needs.
Many horror stories are told of Hospitals, to become myths.
For the real tragedies that arise we all feel deep sadness.
But the positives are many too.
Take Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for Instance.
Offering a wide range of World class treatments from caring and helpful professionals, the Hospital is achieving short waiting times and very low rates of infections for patients.
As one of the leading Foundation Trusts in the country it is run by the community on behalf of the community.

Using modern equipment the Hospital is well known for its pioneering work and research.
One of the abiding strengths of Barnsley Townsfolk is that they place great importance on community spirit and care. As they would rightly expect, a community Hospital is expected to perform at the highest standards of care and governance. Good health and life skills are at the heart of Barnsley’s needs and Staff do their best to continue as positive contributors to the experience of going into Hospital, which is an anxious time. This enables the experience to be a reassuring one for patients.
Barnsley celebrates such care and thanks all dedicated Staff.

Football connections mean something

My Friends keep telling me I support too many football teams, hoping one will lift a trophy!
When you see who I take an Interest in you will see where I get my patience from!
Nottingham Forest, Leicester City,Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Huddersfield Town, Barnsley FC and Liverpool.
I just have good taste!
All of them have a connection with me and they remain strong.
I would make an appeal to Wanderers though.
Its time to get some points. Just put the ball in the net....No, theres!
Oh well, theres always next week.

Aerospace is a remarkable sector of Industry

I have had the pleasure of speaking to audiences all over Europe. I make it clear that I do not speak for a living, that I dont believe in the Idea of "Experts" but I celebrate and share experience.
Humour is an Important part of speaking, done appropriately to get a reaction and hold attention.
This photo saw me in front of a large audience from the Aerospace Sector.
These are bright people to be admired.
I am holding a Glider and about to pull a few legs.
I recall BAE entering into the spirit of things to make it a memorable exchange.
From Boeing to Airbus I have been privileged to work with exceptional people.
Like all Industries they are facing new challenges but what has been achieved by talented people is remarkable and we should celebrate that achievement.

We are rooted...In Family.

Dont you just Love old Photos?
This is my Mum from Chesterfield and Dad from Manchester, whose Family were from beautiful Galway.
They Died within nine months of each other, my Dad looking utterly lost without Mum.
Cherish those closest to you as they become your Soulmate, Right arm and Confidant.
No matter how old you get...Parents are always missed.
My Brother and I played many a trick on Mum and Her laughter made us feel secure.
Dads years in the RAF through the War gave Him a strong bond with those He served with but never came home.
He had the emotional scars that come from the horrors of the times.
The past is always a lesson but with each year that passes we tend to forget.
Family is Important. Treasure the time.

How the Years have passed...Kindly of course!

If you are guessing, I am second row on the end (Left) The joker in the pack!
An amusing story of meeting the Chief Constable was when He noticed my Moustache. (Mexican Bandit Style)
With a glint in His eye He made it clear that He had noticed it and said" Not a great choice for the job you have chosen".
Great days, great people and brilliant training for life.
And no...In my own time with the years passing I had to grow up and the Moustache went.....making me look much younger of course.
Its just good DNA!

Truth can change things...but we may need to set the lead first

As the end of 2011 comes rushing forward I can see much to reflect on this Year.
Its been unusual at best and thrown up some challenges to test resillience.
People are more anxious than I have ever seen them and I detect as a consequence an Increase in "Me First".
For many, December will be a time to remember that the gap between the "Haves" and"Have Nots" has widened ever further.
Whilst many will feel protected at the top end, the uncertainties in the air trouble them more than ever.
I often read about poverty around the World, feeling sad that my fellow Man inflicts brutality against the weak and vulnerable.
In truth, often rejected by many, there is poverty on our own doorstep.
100% of people say they care but the reality is that 10% actually do something, however small, to show a quality that is commendable.
I am a realist. I now that equality for all is often spoken of by those seeking power over others, with little progress on the ground. I would suggest that History is proof of little progress and its worth taking a moment to be honest about it.
My heart goes out to Families who find themselves in dire straights and who have little confidence of being noticed.
When and how we can, lets put a little more kindness back into our community.
Seeing beyond ourselves may not be easy but seeing the outcome for others is Inspiring.
Its time the 90% realised that when we all care together, even in small ways, we share the responsibility of our communities who are stronger for it.
It takes courage to admit that we could and should be helping others more than we do.
It begins with ourselves and sets the lead for others.
Begin locally and work outward....

Business is best with nice people

I have been fortunate to travel throughout Europe on Business.
On more than one occasion I used Tivoli Hotels in Portugal for our annual conference with my distributors.
Portimao became a favourite setting for everyone, being in a lovely marina.
Its been some years since I organised this now, but Claudia Pinto at Tivoli has written often to see how life is.
Sometimes in business you meet people who become friends and this is an added bonus.
Thank you Claudia for staying in touch.
Special people are hard to find and the memories of time in Portimao burn brightly.

Dignity is such a fine recommendation

Its sad that so often the most dignified behaviour comes from real despair.
For anyone who has had to watch a Loved one challenged by Cancer struggle or lose their battle, the empty feeling cannot be explained.
An observer feels helpless whilst the sufferer feels so much is left to say and do.
Its frustrating on all sides.
Staying positive is vital for everyone.
A photograph taken at a Hospital Bed during Cancer treatment with one holding the others hand and declaring "This is all I can do" is a poignant expression of feelings.
It is also a symbol of Love and Care and what else can any of us give.
Its reassurance is Immense.
Its a shame that real Dignity is often revealed through the most trying times.
Never take life for granted and fill it with as much Love as you can for those special people in your life.

Be a positive Influence

We all Love people with boundless positive energy and Love of life.

She has written great songs for others but what a great Singer....still doing what She does best.

Is it me Dan....or are people watching us!

Yep, I think we have to give way on the consensus for this one Dan. We do look pretty serious!
That said,it is of course true.
Very serious about social and economic issues in both Barnsley and South Yorkshire in general.
As Member of Parliament for Barnsley Central, Dan Jarvis knows that Politics will never fix the Ills of Society.
The solution is not in Westminster.
What makes our relationship, and I hope our Friendship firm, is that I do not do Politics and Dan can see beyond them too.
It’s a healthy and Impartial stance.
People are what matter and local communities face some grim challenges right now. Working together never mattered more.
“I don’t know about you Dan but being serious is thirsty work. Do you fancy a Pint?”
There, I knew that would work.
Back to being serious tomorrow.

What you say has Power - But beware of Damaging Others

An old jewish tale well illustrates the consequences of spreading hurtful gossip. Told in various forms, the gist of story is as follows.
A man went about town slandering the town's wise man. Later, the malicious gossiper realized his wrong and went to the wise man to ask for forgiveness, offering to do whatever was necessary to make amends. The wise man had one request: The gossiper was told to go and take a feather pillow and cut it open, scattering the feathers to the wind. Though puzzled by the request, the gossiper did as he was instructed and then returned to the wise man.
"Am i now forgiven?" he asked.
"First, go and gather all the feathers," the wise man responded.
"But how can i? The wind has already scattered them."
"It is as difficult to repair the damage done by your words as it is to recover the feathers."
The lesson is clear. Once spoken, words cannot be retrieved, and it may be impossible to undo the hurt they cause. Before spreading a bit of gossip,we are wise to remember that we are, in effect, about to scatter feather in the wind.

Growing up so quick....

Who could Imagine that 16 Years would pass so quickly.
My Grandson Brad (on right) got great exam results and now will study Public Services en route to His chosen career in the Police Service.
He will be a credit to the Service being a well balanced, fair and decent person.
This photo is His "leaving do" at School.
He has the ability to achieve much but will always be popular for His sincerity.
We have enormous pride in Him.

I value my "Crackpot" Friends and Family!

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water.
At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water..
Of course, the perfect pot was
proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed  of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do
After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream.
'I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.'
The old woman smiled, 'Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?'

'That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them.'
For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table.
Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.'
Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding..
You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

SO, to all of my cracked pot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path!
