To Bio or Non Bio - That is the question

There’s no doubt that we Fellas are really grateful for the hard work of you Ladies when our shirts turn up in that magical way when we left them lying around – now looking clean, well pressed and smelling clean.
We Men of course do not understand the intricacies that go into such precise cleaning but it’s good to be well turned out.
Apparently it’s vital to use a non bio washing powder in a cool wash?
You guessed it – I went and asked why and was told that it’s to kill germs, ensure no powder is left behind for sensitive skin and low energy saves the Planet.
Now, you know I don’t like to be too pedantic but this all sounds like good Marketing to me – and I love good Marketing, unless like this case it is based on a Myth!
Pulling at me though is that i am a Chemical Man who deals with cleaning processes in Industry – and such logic defies facts.
Will it break hearts to know?
If you constantly use cold wash its more likely that Bacteria will be present.
Ever thought there was a bad smell when you opened the door? That’s Bacteria and I would hazard a guess that E-Coli is present.
A 30 degree wash likely kills 6-10% of dust mites, whilst 60 degrees will kill 100%.
Non Bio versus Bio like most things in life has been overtaken by technology.
Bio products contain Enzymes that support killing off germs and in modern washing machines the rinse cycles completely eliminate any residues and so crush the sensitivity argument.
A 30 degree wash will likely save us 2 pence when compared overall to a 60 degrees wash. Beware someone playing with percentages when telling us what we might save. After all 2 pence is 100% more than 1 pence!
The trick might be to make sure you do hot washes occasionally since this has a greater ability to kill germs.
I’m not sure if it’s still done now, since cloth nappies have declined, but Mums used to put Napisan in a wash separately to act as a germ killer. Some form of suitable disinfectant in a cool wash has merits.
There’s a lot goes on in a washing machine and the only greater joy of satisfaction comes with the Ironing – another mystery to many Men.
Is it best I pretend it’s still a mystery to me?
You know what they say about “clever clogs” – and in my house those who know best get to do a proper job.
Women know best.......or is that another Myth!
I think it might be against my Human Rights to ask me to comment and anyway, being a Deputy has never bothered me.

Seeing ourselves through the "opinion of others"

I am the first to admit that I will have encountered critics over the years and It helps not to be viewed as perfect!
In life, any opinion must be weighed by the constructive or fair way it is made.
I can say without hesitation that I have been consistent, enabling people to form a clear opinion and then respecting their right to choose.
Of course I reserve the right to be persuaded that I may have missed something occasionally.
If we all agreed on everything it might suggest we had lost some value.
Respect is possible and preferable where we might find ourselves of a different opinion to others.
One person’s reality can be different to another and we come at things from different angles and these are our “Influencers”.
In truth we all learn from each other and remain a “work in progress”.
It’s Impossible to ignore consistencies in what people say when taken from a broad spectrum and our real identity builds like pieces of a puzzle over time.
I have been richly blessed through business travel, resulting success and the generosity of others in their reaction to me.
It can seem self indulgent but it becomes the accumulation of who we are and offers a little proof that we gave of our best and might be yet awaiting our greatest adventure.
To those who have been uplifting I give thanks.
To those occasionally disappointed I give apologies.(excluding business competitors of course!)
So, who am I according to others and what are my leanings?

Core-Chem Limited has worked closely with Derek Carpenter since our business began in September 2002.  As a new business we needed to ensure that our marketing and sales support created quick responses. Derek established initiatives that gave us immediate tools and support that provided the early revenue that helped us on our path to our successful trading today.   The decision to use his skills was a significant factor in our progress. His honesty and integrity, which are values we hold strongly, were obvious from the start.  If you are an established or new starter business, Derek's knowledge and marketing skills can add value and results to your business.  He has a strong work ethic and therefore will be able to keep pace with the demands of a growing business. He can advise you on a wide range of subjects that will help bring strength to your business. He will put forward strong ideas that, when implemented to the full, can benefit your future growth and longer term strategies and potential. He is a good people person and will develop the best in your staff.  Bernard Pye, Managing Director of Core-Chem Limited.

Dear Derek,
Just a few words to reflect on 1997, our first full trading year.
Having benefited from your assistance in selecting the right person to avail ourselves of the best opportunity for sales of your product, 97 wasn't without its problems.
Myself and Gavin reflect on the efforts of all at Amity.
The past year has confirmed your statement "Quality Through Partnership" and
manifested the similarities in both our companies attitude to total quality
management.
Your encouragement for improvement by our employees and your training to assist
continual cost reduction for our customers has been invaluable.
The projections on chemical savings through the product and the applications for customers such as Shorts Guided Missile Systems of up to 80% savings, certainly manifests Amity's commitment.
Your excellent technical and customer support has made our people feel confident, challenged and responsive to our common goals and have belief in your honesty and integrity and enjoy the open lines of communication and access to all your personnel.
Thanking you in anticipation of a long and faithful relationship.
Yours sincerely
Jack Burns
Managing Director – JG Burns Limited, Belfast.

Dear Derek
I think this is probably the first time I have written formally to a governor to share the appreciation of a patient's family, but it is a pleasure to do so.
Mrs W has dropped me a very nice note (copy enclosed) to say how much she
appreciated your help when she had concerns recently regarding her
Husband’s care on Ward 34. I was pleased to learn that the staff were able to listen to and resolve her concerns quickly but really do appreciate the lengths you went to, to help her get this resolution.
Mrs W clearly valued your help a lot, with good reason.
On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to add my sincere thanks to those expressed by Mrs W.
Kind regards,
Steve Wragg – Chairman, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

I write to acknowledge that I have known Derek Carpenter since 1994 as a
competitor, work colleague and on a Personal level.
As a former Director and founder of Amity UK Limited I can confirm Derek was
instrumental in establishing the sales and marketing success of the company.
Through his skills he always promoted a balance of satisfying customer
and company needs.
During this period we achieved the highest results in the companies’ existence, which were not achieved again following his departure.
As Chairman of the Institute of Directors for the South Yorkshire region and on a
business skills and personal level I have no hesitation in supporting Derek's skills.
His standing in the chemical industry and in particular the solvent cleaning industry is without comparison.

How is your opinion influenced?

Who of us would ever suggest we were anything but fair, reasoned and balanced?
It’s a big claim and the only way of judging would be to be very honest with ourselves or take some opinions of others.
How fair we are may depend on what influences us to form our views.
Do we for instance judge people by what they have?
Is a person with much, likely to be held in greater esteem than someone with less?
Does it always follow that a person who went to the best school will be a better prospect than someone who didn’t?
Are we likely to let someone enter our group who is diversely opposite to us?
There are many hidden dangers in dealing with people.
What they wear, where they live and how they portray themselves has the power to distract us.
I am more interested in a person’s loyalty, principles and work ethic than I am in their “self image”.
Of course, here take time to determine and here lies the key to fairness – not making quick judgements.
I was interested to read how the Film Director Michael Winner was treated with great advantage based on the assumption of his wealth.
The reality was that a good illusion had been performed.
What a person has, or appears to have, is no guide to the merits of a person’s character.
People with little often show more honesty and decency than those with much.
When you have much it is possible to lose a sense of injustice and get caught up in a battle of comfort.
A fair person deals with people equally, never putting one on a pedestal and the other on one side.
They dignify everyone with the same respect, deserved or not.
Being consistent in our dealings tells us who we are.
The question arises that if we think of others as less, have we come to think too much of ourselves.
At times, in order to be fair, we have to put our opinions aside and seek out facts.
For those of us who make daily decisions that affect the lives of others – we do well to stop and take a good look at our approach.
After all “There are none as blind as those who cannot, or won’t see”.
